The problem is more widespread than most of us think, and a large percentage of the world's sexually active males face the problem at some time or other. In fact, the number of men seeking to cure premature ejaculation is rising by the day. Though there are certain medical conditions that can cause premature ejaculation - such as prostate and spinal ailments - medical practitioners across the board are of the opinion that the problem is largely a mental one, because what's premature for one individual may be normal for another. Indeed, depending on whom you ask, premature ejaculation can either mean ejaculation before penetration, immediately after penetration, or too soon to satisfy either partner, particularly the woman. Research has shown that on an average, it is common for men to ejaculate after about five minutes of penetration. So if you are among those, you have little cause for worry, and if your best pal brags that he can last endlessly in bed, you can take it with a great deal of salt. However, there is no escaping the fact that premature ejaculation is a bona fide problem for a large number of men, and finding out why it occurs is a big step towards finding a cure for it. Says Adrian Coward of Denver, Colorado, "The very thought of sex terrifies me and all my adult life, I have struggled to build a meaningful relationship because of this." There are others like Adrian for whom the thought of sex is traumatic because they can't find a cure for premature ejaculation. To begin with, these people must realize that according to a large number of medical researches and studies, ejaculation is a combination of neurological and psychological responses. So if you win the war within your mind, you will are likely to have won half the battle. For those men who barely last five minutes after penetration, you probably do not require medical help, but some variations of the techniques you use in bed. One of these is the Chinese Method, which requires you to extend your sexual session by taking 'breaks' in-between as it were. This allows you to maintain your erection for a long time, as well as bring you partner closer to a climax. Yet another technique is to use a thicker or gel-lined condom, which desensitizes the penis, so that you take longer to ejaculate. Also, since stress is a big reason for premature ejaculation, it is important that you relax during your sexual encounter. So do anything that helps you relax, from drinking a little to yogic exercises. For more severe cases, you will obviously have to see a doctor or a licensed sexual therapist trained in the Masters and Johnson techniques. A doctor will probably prescribe antidepressants to help you relax, while sexual therapists initiate you into the Masters and Johnson technique, and the skill of developing your Kagel muscles (the same ones you use to restrict urination). So you see, a cure for premature ejaculation is not as far off as it sounds; you can take positive action to make sure you are on top of the situation!
